Hazardous Materials Clean-Up: A Clandestine Methamphetamine Lab Puts a Community at Risk – Part 1

We heard about a recent CBC story that told the tale of an incredibly dangerous situation for many young families right here in Toronto because of a “secret” meth lab manufacturing narcotics in a high rise condo.

Many residents, including several young families were residents of a high-rise condo complex in which a clandestine meth lab was operating in one of the units.  The building had at least 30 floors with several units per floor and all of them were at risk of contamination from potentially hazardous chemicals or even fire and explosion due to the use of combustible chemicals in the “cooking” process.

The CBC News Toronto article tells us:

As for whether it’s unusual for police to learn of a dangerous and illegal meth lab set up in a residential unit of a condominium, Desrochers said police are rarely surprised by the resourcefulness of some drug manufacturers.  “Certainly there are many challenges with setting up inside a busy residential building, but people seem to find a way,” he said.

Meth Lab decommissioning is serious business and should never be done by anyone without the training and experience to dismantle them safely.  Thankfully the authorities typically use reputable environmental professionals and encourage managers and landlords to do the same. It really boils down to safety and liability as the use of a company without proper training or certification for HAZMAT Removal runs the risk of literally hundreds of people becoming seriously ill or injured. Only highly trained professionals should complete this type of clean-up.  Only an Environmental contractor who is WSIB current, employs full time experienced and knowledgeable crews should be considered.

If you are concerned with the possibility of HAZMAT contamination, FERRO Canada can help put together a solution whereby an Environmental Consultant will outline the work that needs to be done, based on your local regulations or protocols.  They will also advise you whether you can remain on-site during clean up.  In any case, FERRO Canada will be on-site and on-call 24/7.  Once the consultant has re-inspected the site and given you the assurance that the site has been completely decontaminated, FERRO is available for turn-key re-construction services and we will make whole what needed to be demolished.

When you only have one chance to get it right, you can depend on FERRO Canada to complete the job correctly, the first time.  Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.  We can be on-site and on-call 24/7 with one easy, toll-free call: 1-877-429-7750.
